Hugh Hartshorne is one of Australia’s most interesting and talented photographers. His photography style is synonymous with his personal approach to life – authentic and inspired. This approach has delivered him a handful of awards and successful creative campaigns in Australia and the US, and allows him to continue shooting and interpreting the world as he sees it.
Adelaide-born and raised, Hugh started his career as a photojournalist with the Messenger Press, The Adelaide Advertiser and the Australian. While still enjoying the editorial scene, Hugh began to make his mark with Milton Wordley and the Southlight Studio team working on the State Bank of SA, Belvoir Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of SA, Penfolds, Crozer Champagne and Qantas Magazine.
During this period, Hugh became a founding member of ACMP and shot a portrait of Geoffrey Rush as The Alchemist in the Belvoir Theatre. This portrait was honoured with the Photo District News Silver Award for advertising photography and regarded by Rush as the best photo ever taken of him as an actor.
The end of 1995 saw Hugh venture to NYC, which was the beginning of a 15-year love affair. His American clients included AT&T, JetBlue, Rolling Stone, Mens Journal, Tourism Croatia, Jamacian Tourism, Exxon, Bank of New York, Newsweek, Merrill Lynch, Novartis, Lilly, Merck, Ray Ban, Lenscrafters, Chivas Regal and Seagrams.
Most recently, he has completed a two-month photoshoot for Destination NSW.
Hugh now lives between Sydney and Brooklyn with stylist and partner, Monica Willis, and their two kids. When Hugh’s not out looking to capture life’s authentic and unexpected moments, he’s surfing, doing yoga, riding motorcycles and enjoying good food and wine.
Hugh is represented in Australia by Luscious International, and in New York by Judith Miller Inc.
