2018 has been a year of change. Society has witnessed social change, political change, some of the old guard of Hollywood has changed, the climate has kept changing and we have even seen a change of Prime Minister (again). When Astronomers discovered the new dwarf planet “Farout” our understanding of the solar system changed and the Mars Explorer changed the view on our nearest neighbouring planet, then to to top it off, all year long technology has continued changing at an ever-increasing rate.
It has also been a year of change at Luscious. Streaming media has continued to revolutionise the market for film, television and traditional television commercials, delivering opportunities to create new forms of advertising, more independent television productions and the changes have acted as a catalyst to further blur the lines between advertising and entertainment.
Spatial computing, spatial entertainment and immersive communication have continued their rapid pace of development and we have completed a variety of projects beyond anything previously undertaken. We have seen new devices and emergent technology drive development of transformative experiences with unprecedented change on the horizon in advertising, entertainment, health, education, science and industry. 2019 promises to be a very exciting year.
The start of the year saw the soft launch of our rebranding with the company expanding the range of projects we have taken on. Richard and Jeff combined as a creative team on many of the larger projects and Carolien Foley joined the company as a project manager later in the year, bringing her expertise on her mission to expand our narrative based XR portfolio.
Beyond our traditional advertising-based projects we have completed projects across an expansive range of different production styles and delivery formats. Our highest profile project was arguably the JAMES CAMERON - CHALLENGING THE DEEP experience produced for the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM. As well as user journey, scripting, production, editing, soundtrack conception, interactive display design and designing the computer-controlled lighting and showtime plan, Luscious created the television, online and print advertising campaign to promote the highly popular exhibition.
OUR YEAR IN SHORT
We began the year immersed in our first large-scale experiential installation producing the record-breaking James Cameron; Challenging the Deep immersive museum experience.
In the first quarter of the year we also produced our first 6 degrees of freedom VR production for IPP AMERICA. The life-like experience combined filmed live-action, digital matte paintings and 3D CGI to create a fully stocked and visually operational pet store delivering a truly immersive experience.
The International Festival of Creativity saw Luscious awarded for its first foray into 360 VR with the J. Walter Thompson Worldwide project VIRTUAL EQUALITY – VIRTUAL REALITY ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN winning a Silver Lion.
Continuing with the year of firsts, Luscious received plaudits upon delivery of our first CGI based 6K widescreen format historical film OPERATION JAYWICK – DARK VICTORY to the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Luscious signalled their arrival to large-scale installation production with the emotionally charged, haunting imagery of the CENTENARY OF THE ARMISTICE – AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL public program which brought many who witnessed it to tears.
The year of firsts continued with Luscious commencing development on several other exciting long-term projects including: ROMEO AND JULIET: VIRTUAL VERONA in partnership with a nationally renown theatre company, the INNER WONDERLAND virtual reality healing experience (designed to treat chronic pain) and a VR based cognitive decision-making enhancement system being developed in partnership an elite sports organisation.
During this year of renewal we have discovered no matter if we are producing traditional film, television or advertising, or pushing the boundaries of spatial technology in XR, projection mapping buildings, designing interactive installations or creating immersive experiences, if a project is to be successful it must always have an engaging narrative which carries the audience on a transformative journey.
Here is to an exciting 2019 with expanding horizons and a better world for all.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at LUSCIOUS.
